GETEC ENERGIE is working with students from the University of Münster on blockchain solutions for the energy world of tomorrow
Hanover, 13.11.2019 - As part of a project seminar, computer science students from Münster are working with GETEC ENERGIE GmbH (GETEC ENERGIE) to develop a smart meter gateway that will pave the way for new blockchain-based business models.
Blockchain is evolving from a mere buzzword into a sustainable trend in the energy industry. However, the challenge remains to develop practicable solutions and sustainable business models. With this in mind, GETEC ENERGIE and GETEC net are cooperating with the Institute of Computer Science at the University of Münster (WWU) as part of a project seminar.
In this practical seminar of the "Safety-critical systems" working group, students evaluate different configuration options for the application of blockchain technology. The aim of the project work is to develop an interface to a so-called "smart meter gateway". This interface should enable data measured at an electricity meter to be integrated into the blockchain.
"For the students, it is always a welcome change from the rather fundamentally oriented everyday life of computer science studies when they can apply their knowledge in practice," says Prof. Dr. Anne Remke, who supervises the project seminar together with her doctoral student Jannik Hüls, explaining her motivation for the cooperation with GETEC ENERGIE. The "Safety-critical systems" working group headed by Prof. Dr. Remke deals with the modeling and reliability of critical infrastructure, which also includes the network security of the power supply.
"The collaboration with WWU is particularly interesting for GETEC net, as smart meters are already an important topic for us. We find it extremely exciting to see how our smart metering services can benefit from blockchain technology," says Heiko Mevert, CEO of GETEC net GmbH, explaining his company's involvement.
"For GETEC ENERGIE, the direct exchange with students is always an enrichment. We hope to gain new food for thought and fresh input from the cooperation with the WWU," says Bernward Peters, CEO of GETEC ENERGIE.
