Holcim Germany will purchase green electricity from GETEC ENERGIE via PPA marketplace enPortal from 2022.

Hamburg/Hanover, 03.08.2021 - From 2022, GETEC ENERGIE GmbH (GETEC ENERGIE) will supply Holcim (Deutschland) GmbH with green electricity from German wind farms that are no longer subsidized as part of a direct power supply agreement (PPA). The supply came about via the new PPA tendering platform enPortal.

The German subsidiary of one of the world's largest cement manufacturers, Holcim (Deutschland) GmbH, will be purchasing its green electricity from Hanover-based energy service provider GETEC ENERGIE in future. From January 1, 2022, GETEC ENERGIE will supply the Hamburg-based company with sustainably generated electricity from several German wind farms that are no longer subsidized. GETEC ENERGIE will supply 55 GWh p.a. of wind power under a power purchase agreement. This enables Holcim to transparently track where the electricity consumed at the cement plants in Lägerdorf (Schleswig-Holstein) and Höver (Lower Saxony) comes from. Holcim is helping to increase sustainability in the construction industry with innovative solutions and ecological products. The purchase of green electricity with the help of direct electricity supply contracts fits perfectly into the picture here: Not only is wind power a climate-friendly energy source per se, but generating it with older wind turbines that are no longer subsidized conserves resources. By using so-called EEG 20Plus plants, these plants can continue to operate economically and do not have to be dismantled. "Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. The procurement of physical green electricity via PPAs is an essential part of reducing our indirect CO2 emissions (Scope 2) in energy-intensive cement production," explains Thorsten Hahn, CEO of Holcim (Deutschland) GmbH. "Thanks to the PPA now concluded with GETEC ENERGIE for wind turbines, our cement plants in Lägerdorf (Schleswig-Holstein) and Höver (Lower Saxony) will be supplied with green electricity from defined wind farms in a transparent and traceable manner at all times. Our plan for the coming years is to continuously increase our purchase of renewable electricity for our cement production," continues Hahn. However, Holcim is not only a pioneer in terms of sustainability, but also in terms of digitalization. The tender on which the supply by GETEC ENERGIE is based is the first digital PPA tender via the enPORTAL online marketplace. "Holcim is increasingly setting standards in the sustainable production of building materials - and now also in digitally organized energy procurement," explains Cord Wiesner, Managing Director of GETEC ENERGIE. "PPAs are the ideal tool for bringing producers and consumers of green electricity together and can be easily arranged purely digitally," Wiesner continues.
