Union Investment concludes four-year PPA with GETEC ENERGIE.

Hamburg/Hanover, 13.12.2021 - GETEC ENERGIE GmbH (GETEC ENERGIE) will supply fund properties from Union Investment's portfolio with green electricity from German wind farms that are no longer subsidized under a direct power supply agreement (PPA) from 2022..

Union Investment Real Estate GmbH will continue to purchase green electricity from Hanover-based energy service provider GETEC ENERGIE. From January 1, 2022 to December 31, 2025, GETEC ENERGIE will supply various fund properties of the Hamburg-based real estate investment manager with sustainably generated electricity from several German wind farms that are no longer subsidized. In the first year of delivery, the green electricity supply will amount to 25 GWh, rising to 50 GWh in each of the following years.Union Investment's real estate division has been integrating sustainability into its business strategy for over ten years. The purchase of green electricity, primarily via PPAs, underlines Union Investment's climate protection efforts in two ways: not only is wind power fundamentally a climate-friendly source of energy, but generation with so-called EEG 20Plus plants also conserves resources. By using older wind turbines that are no longer subsidized, they can continue to operate economically and do not have to be dismantled."Supplying our properties with green electricity is an important component of our holistic sustainability strategy," explains Jan von Mallinckrodt, Head of Sustainability at Union Investment Real Estate GmbH. "Through the PPA concluded with GETEC ENERGIE, our fund properties in the common areas throughout Germany are supplied with green electricity from clearly identifiable wind farms. In 2022, we will be able to cover a quarter of our total landlord requirements with wind power from GETEC ENERGIE, and 50% from 2023 onwards. We want to continuously expand this share," von Mallinckrodt continues."PPAs are the ideal procurement method for anyone who wants to help ensure that plants that are no longer subsidized can also be operated economically," explains Cord Wiesner, Managing Director of GETEC ENERGIE. "After all, using existing infrastructure and not dismantling it for no reason is the core idea of sustainability," Wiesner continues.
