The market for renewables in Poland is changing rapidly: GETEC-ENERGIE subsidiary GEWI Sp. z o.o. is benefiting from increased demand for marketing offers for large quantities.

Szczecin/Hanover, 18.10.2023 - The Polish market for renewable energies is experiencing enormous growth - especially in terms of installed PV capacity. The Polish GETEC-ENERGIE subsidiary GEWI Sp. z o.o. can fully exploit its strengths when it comes to marketing the green electricity generated.

Poland is experiencing a sharp rise in demand for green electricity. The high energy prices caused by the war in Ukraine, among other things, combined with bottlenecks in the availability of coal have led to a sharp increase in the importance of electricity production from renewable energy plants. Electricity generation in 2022 increased by 3.6 TWh (+24%) for wind power plants and by as much as 7 TWh (+151%) for photovoltaic systems compared to the previous year. In the current year (Q1-Q3), Polish PV systems have already generated 19% more electricity than in the whole of 2022*. In the second quarter of 2023, Poland recorded 13,818 MW of installed capacity for PV and 9,698 MW for wind power plants**.

However, the electricity market in Poland is also becoming more complex due to the increased feed-in of green electricity. For example, the Polish electricity exchange experienced negative prices for the first time ever this year: in June on the day-ahead market (FIXING II) and in September on the balancing energy market. Grid operators have started to shut down plants on particularly sunny and windy days – especially when these fall on public holidays.

The GETEC-ENERGIE subsidiary GEWI Sp. Z o.o., founded in 2021, is directly feeling the change in the Polish energy market: the demand from operators of larger wind power and photovoltaic plants in Poland for economically interesting and at the same time reliable marketing opportunities has grown noticeably in the second half of 2022 and this year. “We are observing that the market for renewable energies in Poland has grown up this year. Where plants with less than 1 MW used to produce green electricity, there are now also many large-scale producers,” explains Małgorzata Kucharska, Managing Director of GEWI Sp. z o.o. “Marketing large quantities on the Polish electricity exchange and directly to consumers via PPAs is our core business. We also support investors who are new to the Polish market with comprehensive services so that they comply with all formal requirements of the distribution system operators, transmission system operators and the Polish energy authorities. Our customers benefit from our experience in other European markets and our familiarity with the peculiarities of the Polish market,” continues Kucharska.

The direct marketing company founded in 2021 GEWI Sp. z o.o. offers plant operators in Poland not only traditional direct marketing on the electricity exchanges, but also long-term PPAs, trading in guarantees of origin and asset rights as well as other supplementary energy industry services.
