Double sustainability for film production: the POLIFILM Group will purchase green electricity from GETEC ENERGIE in 2024 via a PPA.
Osterburken/Weißandt-Gölzau/Hanover, January 9, 2024 - POLIFILM EXTRUSION GmbH and POLIFILM OSTERBURKEN GmbH will be purchasing green electricity from wind power and photovoltaic systems from Hanover-based energy service provider GETEC ENERGIE GmbH (GETEC ENERGIE) from January 1, 2024. GETEC ENERGIE will supply a total of over 34 GWh via a direct power supply agreement (PPA).
Since January 1, 2024, the Weißandt-Gölzau and Osterburken sites of the POLIFILM Group, an international specialist for extrusion and protective film solutions, have been purchasing green electricity from the energy service provider GETEC ENERGIE. As part of a direct electricity supply contract, also known as a PPA (Power Purchase Agreement), GETEC ENERGIE will initially supply the POLIFILM Group with a total of more than 34 GWh of wind and solar power per year for the year 2024. This means that several companies, including POLIFILM EXTRUSION, Poli-Coat and the recycling and circular economy specialist POLICYCLE, will benefit from the purchase of green electricity.
Purchasing electricity via a PPA enables commercial energy consumers to transparently track which plants are generating the electricity. The two companies in the POLIFILM Group will be supplied with sustainably generated electricity in 2024, which will come from several German wind farms that are no longer subsidized. On the other hand, the green electricity supplied will be generated in several photovoltaic systems.
“By purchasing from GETEC ENERGIE, we are taking a big step towards our goal as POLIFILM EXTRUSION of sourcing up to 30% of our energy requirements from renewable resources,” says Patrick Ihms, Commercial Director at POLIFILM Extrusion and project manager. “In total, we will be able to save almost 17,000 tons of CO2 in the production of our film solutions at both sites.”
“We are delighted to be able to support the companies in the POLIFILM Group in producing in an even more climate-friendly way,” says Cord Wiesner, CEO of GETEC ENERGIE. “The purchase of green electricity from plants that are no longer subsidized via a PPA offers a double sustainability dimension. Firstly, consumers receive environmentally friendly electricity from these plants. Secondly, the purchase of electricity from these older plants supports their continued operation, which in turn reduces the consumption of resources. This contributes significantly to the responsible use of limited resources,” Wiesner continues.
POLIFILM EXTRUSION is part of the family-run, internationally active POLIFILM Group, a leading manufacturer of polyethylene & polypropylene-based extrusion films and protective film solutions headquartered in Cologne, Germany. With 11 plants and approx. 1,600 employees at over 20 locations worldwide, the family-owned company, founded in 1972, generated a turnover of €752 million in 2022.
