Energy supply and services for railroad companies

For railroad companies, energy is a key component of their operating costs. In recent years, prices for electricity and natural gas have been and remain volatile. At the same time, the integration of renewable energies and the decarbonization of the rail sector are key issues of the energy transition that rail companies need to address. However, railroad companies do not have to be  passively exposed to these conditions, but can actively optimize their costs through intelligent energy procurement and at the same time make a contribution to reducing carbon emissions.

We look forward to working with you.

We have a track record of providing traction current.

In Germany, Austria and Switzerland, traction current is used at a frequency of 16.7 hertz, in contrast to the usual grid frequency of 50 hertz. This is one of the reasons why traction power supply is a challenging task for energy suppliers, requiring specialized technical solutions and comprehensive regulatory knowledge. Feeding braking energy back into the traction current grid is also a special feature and must be handled correctly from a technical and regulatory perspective in order to ensure grid stability. In addition, users of the traction current grid are subject to special reporting obligations and regulatory requirements that differ from those of the regular 50 Hertz grid. These regulatory requirements include the reporting of usage data records and compliance with specific balancing group systems, which entail additional administrative and technical challenges. GETEC ENERGIE has years of experience with providing traction current and can support railroad companies with managing this complexity.

Finding the right mix: energy from renewable and conventional sources

We provide targeted support to railroad companies to procure power and gas according to their individual needs – both from renewable and conventional sources. Together with you, we analyze your current situation, your decarbonization goals and develop a roadmap based on your specifications. This can for example include products related to electricity from renewable sources - such as supplementary guarantees of origin (GOOs) or power purchase agreements (PPAs) – and/or the procurement of biomethane. Biomethane can in some instances offer a reduction in carbon emissions, and can partially or completely replace fossil natural gas.

Combining planning security and flexibility: let’s define your procurement strategy together

Commercial energy consumers often seek procurement models that are ideal for maintaining the balance between planning security and flexibility, on the one hand, and  decarbonisation goals and market-driven prices, on the other hand. GETEC ENERGIE supports its customers with flexible procurement models offering planning security and flexibility by combining long-term products and short-term market opportunities. Depending on your individual situation, this could mean, for example, procuring a certain percentage of your power need on the futures market, another part via a PPA and remaining smaller amounts on the short-term spot market. This can be an important factor for successfully shaping a company’s energy costs.

Our services at a glance

Most of the energy which GETEC ENERGIE sells to its commercial and industrial customers is derived from conventional sources. We also offer our customers a range of lower-carbon products. You can find details of our services here:
